Give your music lover a gift from around the world: an instrument from Jamtown.
John Hayden, the founder of Jamtown Music Center in Lake City, has created fair-trade relationships with artists across the globe to bring their traditional folk instruments to the U.S.
One piece with broad appeal is the Rebana Frame Drum from Java, Indonesia, which is made from mango wood and goat hide. It’s then decorated with intricate designs through a traditional batik process.
The drums are 8–9 inches in diameter and ship with a stick, though in Java they are played only with the hands, like a tambourine. This is a work of art you can play.
For ages 3 and up.
