Holiday shopping: Think about style and interests when shopping for home décor gifts

You can’t go wrong getting a loved one something to adorn his or her home. That is, you can’t go wrong if you truly consider the tastes and interests of that person.

A terra cotta pitcher might seem dull to a friend whose home is splashed with bright colors. But it may be perfect for the relative whose abode is inspired by Country Home Magazine.

Sandy Kortright, Crate & Barrel’s senior product manager for gifts, says to consider a person’s passions.

“How do they entertain?” she asks. “What are the colors they live with and even wear?”

Appetizer plates, bar trays and wine decanters are at the top of her list for the foodie. For those who like to garden, she suggests mouth-blown vases and centerpiece bowls.

Stephen Cardino, vice president of home fashions for Macy’s, says gold, copper and mercury glass are all in style. His top gift suggestion for your favorite chef is Macy’s new Martha Stewart Collection Copper Accent 12 Piece Cookware Set (on sale for $180).

Ralph Snyder, vice president of home design for Kohl’s, suggests adding Fido’s name or picture to a gift if your loved one adores his pet.

“Add a personal hint with initials, a favorite animal or a sentimental holiday phrase on ornaments, frames and stockings to complement your gift,” Snyder says.

Here are more home-décor gift ideas for all types of people.

Totally Bamboo State Shaped Cutting/Serving Board ($20 at Bed, Bath & Beyond). The perfect gift for friends who take pride in their state, this bamboo board has a pre-drilled hanging hole so it can also serve as kitchen decoration.

The Cellar Fox Salt & Pepper Shakers (on sale for $6 at Macy’s). These fantastic foxes add an adorable touch to any table. Perfect for animal lovers or those who like a bit of whimsy in their home.

Crate & Barrel Marin Red Serving Bowl (on sale for $20). Lovers of bold colors will admire the rich crimson-red of this 10.25-inch artisanal ceramic bowl. The freeform rim makes it a bit more casual for daily display.

Threshold Silver Mercury Glass Hurricane Candle Holder ($20 at Target). Give this elegant holder with a red or green candle in it for Christmas, and you’ll provide a holiday centerpiece and lasting decoration in one package.

Rosanna Porcelain Typography Tray ($10 at Nordstrom). Pick a single letter or purchase a few of these handy catch-alls. The word “love” would be our choice.

Pottery Barn Personalized Dog Pillow Covers ($35.50–$39.50). Have a dog lover on your list? These linen pillows, which come with free personalization, let her brag about her breed.

Ion Audio Archive LP Real Wood Turntable ($70 at Bed, Bath & Beyond). This retro piece has had a makeover, and includes a USB drive and built-in speakers. It can also convert LPs to MP3s.
