Eco chic: Designs make trash into hip accessories

By Bree Coven Brown / Special to Sunday Market

squigglechick3_0223_570Willing to embrace the idea of trash as treasure? Squigglechick Designs’ upcycled garbage is pop culture you can wear.

Kirkland mixed-media artist Tracy Borders recycles soda-bottle wrappers, beer labels, chip bags, candy wrappers and coffee packaging into handmade accessories for people and pets.

Sport an oversized cuff bracelet made from a Pyramid Haywire beer label ($12); carry a Dr Pepper wallet ($30); pop a Pop Rocks luggage tag ($12) on your suitcase; or dress your dog in an Elysian Brewery dog collar ($20; shown). All while knowing your purchase has saved these wrappers from the landfill.

Borders hand-dyes eco-friendly fabrics such as bamboo and organic cotton for the backing of each item.

$12–$30 at etsy.com/shop/squigglechick. Dog collars available at BooBoo Barkery & Boutique, Kirkland
