Prom perfect: Pair trendy with elegant to create a modern prom-night look

By Caitlin King / Special to Sunday Market

Prom is the most stylish soiree of the year for teens. Find your perfect look by going for a classic silhouette mixed with one of the season’s top trends.

Whether your party persona veers more toward pretty pastels or edgy cutouts, we’ve got pieces that will have you dancing in the (store) aisles.

Fairytale elegance

If your ideal look is feminine and flirty, you’ll feel pretty in pink in the blush-colored Hailey by Adrianna Papell Embellished Cutout Ballgown ($209 at Nordstrom). The sheer cutout at the waist shines with gold and silver rhinestones.

Or channel your inner goddess in H&M’s Long Dress ($60) in light green or navy. The romantic one-shoulder style is softly pleated and comes with a removable belt covered in flower appliqués.

Pair your elegant gown with Glint’s Daryn Sandal ($120 at Nordstrom). The keyhole-shaped metallic sandal is flattering on the foot, and rhinestones add just the right amount of sparkle.

Trendy cutouts

Cutouts are cool and modern, but it’s important to keep them classy and subtle. The BCBG Max Azria Kauri One-Shoulder Gown ($338 at BCBG) has a minimal center cutout, hitting at the most flattering part of the stomach.

Hailey Logan’s Embellished Cutout Strapless Gown ($199 at is another option. The bright white dress dramatically gathers at the side to meet a silver sequined cutout that offers a glimpse of skin.

Highs and lows

High-low styles allow you to play with shorter lengths while still keeping a formal look. The City Studios Juniors Strapless High-Low Gown (on sale for $65 at Macy’s) is a flirty nude-colored frock that goes up to size 17.

Or go for girly glamour with the hot-pink Milly Ava Sweetheart Strapless Lace Dress ($475 at Neiman Marcus). The pleated A-line skirt with scalloped hem is perfect for dancing the night away.

A shorter dress looks well balanced with a lower heel. Zara’s Sling Back Sandals ($50) glitter in gold and create a long leg line. The company’s Medium Heel Leather Sandal ($100, both at Zara, downtown) adds jewels and a short stacked heel.

The blues

Rich blues ruled the red carpets this year. Get your own Hollywood glamour with Jump Juniors’ Strapless Sequin Dress (on sale for $250 at Macy’s), in a vibrant royal blue with a sheer back panel that ensures drama from every angle.

Adrianna Papell’s Sleeveless Tiered Empire-Waist Gown ($239–$249 at Macy’s) comes in a deep navy (or rich purple) in sizes up to 22. The silky tiers and wide waistband create an über-flattering shape.

Top either dress with matching pavé crystal earrings, such as Kate Spade New York’s Up the Ante Statement Earrings ($98 at Kate Spade, downtown) in cobalt and gold.

For the boys

If you’d rather not rent a tux, you can still look sharp in a dark suit. Many celebs traded out their tuxes for navy suits on red carpets this year. You can do the same with the slim-fitting Zara Blue Suit ($190 for the Blazer, $90 for the Trousers at Zara, downtown).

Even if you do decide to rent, you can add your own finishing touches. A silk bow tie, such as the Tie Black ($45 at Suitsupply, downtown), is a stylish and classic piece you just might wear again someday.

A pair of formal-occasion shoes will also serve you into the future. Try Calvin Klein’s Gareth Tuxedo Oxfords ($130 at Macy’s), in patent leather with a padded footbed for classic style as well as comfort.
