Kids’ shop: Tiny kites let you fly wherever you roam
By Bree Coven Brown / Special to Sunday Market
It’s spring — go fly a kite. Anywhere.
Microkites, handmade by Bruce Johnson in Portland, are pocket-sized kites just 3 inches in diameter that fly as high as 100 feet on a line of simple sewing thread. Each tiny kite is made of tissue paper, light wrapping paper and vellum on a hand-carved bamboo frame.
Microkites can be flown anywhere — just walking down the street creates enough momentum for it to trail behind you. And they’re easy enough for small children to fly.
Kites can be customized with your own image or photo, making them popular wedding and birthday-party favors.
$3–$5 each. Find ordering information at microkites.net.
