Wii is best-selling U.S. game console in December and 2007

Not a huge shock to anyone who followed the second season of hype around the Nintendo Wii, but NPD made it official today.

The market researcher’s December U.S. video game industry report says the Nintendo Wii sold 1.35 million units in the month, bringing its total for 2007 to 6.29 million. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 turned in a solid December, as well, with 1.26 million units sold, for an annual total of 4.62 million. Sony’s PlayStation 3 did not break 1 million units for the month, though its predecessor, the PS2, sold 1.1 million units.

As for whether people were substituting Xbox 360s or PS3s for hard-to-find Wiis, NPD analyst Anita Frazier doesn’t think so. “[H]ardware sales are most influenced by the kinds of games a consumer wants to play, and it would appear that the PS2 was a more likely ‘substitute choice’ in that scenario,” she said in comments distributed with NPD’s report. “Given the breadth of available content and the price point of the PS2, it’s a mass-market friendly choice and will continue to be an important part of the games ecosystem for several years.”

Life-to-date, Sony has sold 41.12 million units in the U.S.

Details on the hottest game titles in December after the jump.

Not a single game in NPD’s list of the 10 best sellers in December was for the PS3, but the PS2 claimed the third- and eighth-best selling titles, “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” and “Madden NFL 08,” respectively.

The best-selling game in December was “Call of Duty IV” for the Xbox 360, with 1.47 million units sold. It was also the third-best-seller for the year. A close second in December, with 1.4 million units, was “Super Mario Galaxy” for the Wii.

No surprise here: “Halo 3,” exclusive to the Xbox 360, was the top selling game in 2007, with 4.82 million units in the U.S.
