Wii passes Xbox 360 in total U.S. sales

NPD Group just released data confirming what Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime predicted in February. His company’s Wii console sold 666,700 units in the U.S. in June, bringing its total install base to 10.9 million, taking the lead from Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 with 219,800 units sold in June, has a U.S. install base of 10.5 million. The console hit the market a year ahead of the Wii and PlayStation 3.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 had a strong month of sales. “PS3 unit sales were the highest of any month outside of that recorded during previous November/December holiday timeframes,” wrote NPD analyst Anita Frazier in comments accompanying the monthly data.

The release of a hot exclusive PS3 title, “Metal Gear Solid 4,” helped drive console sales to 405,500 for the month. Sony’s life-to-date U.S. install base is 4.9 million.
