Microsoft announced several new features for its cloud computing platform Azure at the Professional Developers Conference today in Redmond. The new features are aimed at making it easier and cheaper for comapnies to migrate to cloud computing.
Here’s the hail of bullets on new features:
- Virtual machine features. This will allow companies to move their server applications that run on Windows Server to the cloud without having to rewrite the code for the Azure platform. It’s called the Windows Azure Virtual Machine Role and Server Application Virtualization.
- Application marketplace. Microsoft has built an app marketplace like iTunes for companies to sell cloud applications called the Windows Azure Marketplace. It includes a data marketplace, previously codenamed Dallas, called DataMarket.
- Mini pricing. To reduce financial risk of trying the cloud out, Microsoft says it will offer the Extra Small Windows Azure Instance which costs 5 cents per compute hour.
