MIX11: Major Windows Phone update coming this year

LAS VEGAS — A major update to Windows Phone is coming this year, Microsoft said Wednesday at its MIX conference in Las Vegas.

The update to Windows Phone will have Kinect-like motion sensor capabilities, more Web browsing and application multitasking.

Microsoft’s MIX conference brings together developers for the Web and Windows Phone.

Mobile app developers will get access to the development kit in May. Developers will be able to build apps sense motion via a phone’s camera.

Microsoft also will make a tool kit available for developers to build Kinect for Windows. Kinect is the motion sensor for Xbox that allows gamers to play by moving their bodies and talking.

Microsoft’s animation and video software Silverlight 5 is also now available in beta test version, the company said Wednesday.
