NEW YORK — Microsoft has a news event underway talking about the Mango update for Windows Phone at the Tribeca Grand Hotel Tuesday at 7 a.m.
Here are the major highlights:
7:21 a.m. More information in each contact in the address book. Each contact will have the full communication history, including texts, voice mails, emails and instant messages, including Facebook chats.
Audio text messages. With the update, the phone can read text messages aloud, and it can also transcribe spoken words into a text message reply.
7:28 a.m. Microsoft just showed a British Airways app that has 3-D graphics with a virtual airplane walk through and seat chooser. It uses the XNA development platform for Xbox Live games for Windows Phone. The tile on the phone’s home screen shows the boarding pass QR code so you can scan it from the phone’s home screen to check in.
All these animations Microsoft is showing for Windows Phone tiles makes me wonder whether the next version of Windows will do the same with its PC icons.
7:39 a.m. The Mango update will be delivered to Windows Phones in the fall.
7:43 a.m. Windows Phone Mango will be the release that will be used for the 1st Nokia phones. Samsung, HTC and LG is making new phones that use the Mango update. Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE will also make Windows Phones.
7:44 a.m. Event is over.
Join us back here at noon for a Seattle Times live chat about Windows Phone.
