Microsoft Bing has created a new way to copy and paste text while searching on the iPad.
The Bing for iPad app has a new feature called “lasso” that lets iPad owners circle what they need to select with their finger, instead of highlighting text. Microsoft says the feature can save people up to nine steps.
This is how the feature looks in action in the screenshot to the right.
The update became available in the iPad app store on Tuesday. While it seems like a small update for a free app, the feature shows the resources the Bing team is investing in gaining search traffic on tablets such as the iPad. The Bing app has received positive reviews.
“What you’re seeing today is only the beginning. Lasso moves Bing beyond the search box,” said Tony Chor, a group program manager in the Bing team, in Microsoft blog item. “Although it will only be available in Bing for iPad to begin with, we’re already thinking about how to take Lasso even further – so stay tuned.
Microsoft is expected to release its next version of Windows, code-named Windows 8, to run on tablet devices, between October of this year and next year.
