Microsoft cloud email BPOS had short outage Tuesday

Microsoft’s cloud email service BPOS, or Business Productivity Online Services, had a short outage on Tuesday evening that lasted about 13 minutes.

The company said via Twitter that customers in North and South America were reporting problems accessing email at 10:45 p.m.

At 10:54 p.m. the company tweeted that the service was back online.

I have asked Microsoft whether these BPOS outages also affect Office 365 customers. I will update here when I hear back.

Office 365 is the new version of BPOS that Microsoft started selling on June 28. Office 365 includes Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as a Web service that Microsoft sells by subscription. The service is guaranteed to work 99.9 percent of the time. In a month, that means the service could be down for 43 minutes.

Both BPOS and Office 365 compete with Google Apps, the pay version of Docs and Gmail that Google sells to businesses.

Microsoft has said that because it runs on newer server software, Office 365 is more stable than BPOS was.

Here are Microsoft’s tweets from Tuesday evening.
