Windows Phone “Tango” aiming for lower price point?

After a screen shot of what appears to be a Windows Phone operating system update codenamed “Tango” was revealed on WPCentral.com last week, now there is talk that Tango will be a lower-price-point Windows Phones.

Tango is the OS update that is supposedly due to arrive after the upcoming, big “Mango” update to Windows Phone 7, but before a Windows Phone 8 update.

Mary Jo Foley at ZDnet.com reports that “one of my contacts who asked to remain anonymous said he believed there would be at least one and maybe two Tango releases hitting before the Windows Phone 8 Apollo release. He said Tango was ‘all about Nokia’ and focused on hitting the lower-price point for Windows Phones that Microsoft and Nokia execs have been promising. My contact also said the Tango release may be focused largely or even exclusively on the Asian market.”

A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment.
