Microsoft acquires Twisted Pixel game developer

Microsoft today announced its acquisition of game developer Twisted Pixel, the Austin, Texas-based studio behind Xbox LIVE Arcade’s “Splosion Man” and Kinect for Xbox 360’s “The Gunstringer.”

Twisted Pixel’s developers will now incubate new game and entertainment experiences for the Xbox 360 platform, according to a news release.

The acquisition is the first time in five years that Microsoft has acquired a game company, according to Matt Rosoff at Business Insider, who posits that the success of Kinect, Electronic Art’s purchase of Seattle-based PopCap Games for up to $1.3 billion, and Zynga’s impending IPO may be spurring Microsoft to start buying game companies again.
