Microsoft has high hopes that Nokia’s Lumia 900, launching later this week, will revive its presence in the smartphone market.
It better, because otherwise, Microsoft’s share of that market is tanking.
The latest figures from comScore shows that Microsoft’s smartphone platform — which includes Windows Phone as well as the older Windows Mobile — held only 3.9 percent of U.S. subscribers for the three months ended in February.
That’s down from 4.4 percent for the three months ended in January and 5.2 percent for the three months ended in November 2011.
That’s despite a number of new Windows Phones that have launched since last fall.

Microsoft, Nokia and AT&T are throwing a lot of marketing muscle behind the Lumia 900, which is seen as both Microsoft and Nokia’s big chance to get back into the smartphone game. It’ll be fascinating to see if those hopes and plans work out.
