Microsoft holding “major” event Monday

MIcrosoft has sent out invitations to the media for a “major Microsoft announcement — you will not want to miss it” at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Los Angeles.

It’s a mystery what the event will entail and Microsoft folks aren’t talking.

Ina Fried of AllThingsD says, citing sources outside the company, that the event will show devices — likely tablets — running Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 designed for ARM-based devices.

Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet has several ideas: the Xbox Music unveiling? Microsoft advertising related?

My colleague, Brier Dudley, speculates that Microsoft might be buying Hulu. [Update 6 p.m.: Brier says a source tells him that’s not happening.]

Any guesses?

In any case, next week will be full of Microsoft news between that event and a Windows Phone Summit happening Wednesday in San Francisco, where it’s expected that the company will talk about the next version of its Windows Phone, Windows Phone 8.
