Gartner: Microsoft’s worldwide smartphone market share goes up

Recent figures are looking better for MIcrosoft’s smartphone efforts.

Last week, we had reported that research firm IDC showed Microsoft’s smartphone platforms — Windows Phone and the outdated Windows Mobile — had gained market share (based on shipments) worldwide, going from 2.3 percent in Q2 2011 to 3.5 percent in Q2 2012.

Now research firm Gartner confirms that upward tick, showing Microsoft’s smartphone platform going from 1.6 percent in Q2 2011 to 2.7 in Q2 2012. (IDC and Gartner measured somewhat different things. IDC looked at shipments, while Gartner looked at sales to end users.)
