Microsoft employees to get Surface tablets, Windows Phone 8 handsets, Windows 8 PCs

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer apparently drew an enthusiastic response as he wrapped up the company’s annual employee meeting, held today at KeyArena, with an announcement of the new goodies employees will be receiving in upcoming months.

According to someone familiar with the company, all Microsoft employees worldwide — of which there are more than 90,000 — will receive:

  • A Surface RT tablet.
  • A new work PC with Windows 8. The user can choose between desktops, laptops, ultrabooks and tablets. The company usually refreshes work PCs for employees every three years.
  • A Windows Phone 8 device of their choosing

The employee meeting was not open to the media or the public. But some employees tweeted their enthusiasm late this afternoon, presumably in response to that announcement:

“Wow! Steve Ballmer blew the rough [sic] off the Key Arena for the company meeting today! Can’t share details though. ;-)”

“Steve Ballmer is the new Oprah! Our Company Meeting was so magical, everyone was glued to their seats. So much innovation!”

“Quite the energetic, emotional and very generous ending to the Microsoft company meeting from Ballmer!”
