Ballmer’s salary up slightly but he hits less of his target this year

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer received base pay of $685,000, along with a bonus of $620,000, which represents 91 percent of his target award, in the fiscal year ended June 30, according to Microsoft’s proxy statement filed today.

The 91 percent compares with the 100 percent Ballmer achieved the previous fiscal year, when his base salary was $682,500 and the target award he received was also $682,500.

The board cited the following factors in giving Ballmer only 91 percent of his target: Modest growth in Windows Phone market share; 3 percent decline in revenue for the Windows and Windows Live Division (1 percent after adjusting for the impact of the Windows Upgrade Offer); slower than planned progress in the Online Services Division; and the Windows division’s failure to provide a browser choice screen on certain Windows PCs in Europe as required by its 2009 commitment with the European Commission.

Positive factors the board cited included: Success in completing development of Windows 8 and the new Office suite; the successful launch of SQL Server 2012 and System Center 2012, contributing to 12 percent growth in Server and Tools Business revenue; integration of Skype; progress in introducing new form factors such as Surface; strong operating expense discipline; and overall solid business performance that produced $31.6 billion in cash flow from operations, an increase of 17 percent.

The employee with the highest total compensation package was Chief Operating Officer B. Kevin Turner with $10.7 million, of which $7.5 million was in stock.

The annual stockholders meeting will take place at 8 a.m. Nov. 28 at Meybenbauer Center in Bellevue.
