Office 2013/Office 365 released to manufacturers

The upcoming build of Office — including Office 2013 applications, Office 365, Exchange 2013, Lync 2013, SharePoint 2013, Project 2013 and Visio 2013 — has been released to manufacturers.

RTM is the last big milestone before general availability to consumers, which Microsoft says will take place in the first quarter of 2013.

Starting Oct. 19, customers purchasing Office 2010 will receive the new Office free when it’s available, according to an official blog post from the Office team.

A preview version of Office will show up on Windows RT devices — tablets running on ARM-based chips — beginning Oct. 26, when Windows 8 launches.

The new Office will be available not just as a software package, but as a service that operates from the cloud that people can subscribe to.

The cloud-based version of Office is called Office 365. The more traditional software that people download or purchase in a package with a disk is referred to as Office 2013.
