Microsoft announces quarterly dividend, changes IE policy on Flash, launches Lync 2013 mobile app

I’m back in the office after a few days away. Here are several things that happened during that time:

— Microsoft on Monday declared a quarterly dividend of 23 cents per share — the same amount as its past few quarterly dividends. The dividend is payable June 13, 2013 to shareholders of record on May 16, 2013. The ex-dividend date will be May 14.

—┬áStarting today, Microsoft is updating Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 and Windows RT to enable Flash content to run by default (unless the Flash content is on a blacklist that Microsoft is calling “Compatibility View.”) Previously, IE10 in Windows RT and Windows 8’s tile mode ran Flash content only if it was on Microsoft’s whitelist. (All Flash content was able to run — and will continue to run — on Windows 8’s desktop mode.)

“As we have seen through testing over the past several months, the vast majority of sites with Flash content are now compatible with the Windows experience for touch, performance, and battery life,” Microsoft said of its decision in an official blog post. “With this update, the curated Compatibility View (CV) list blocks Flash content in the small number of sites that are still incompatible with the Windows experience for touch or that depend on other plug-ins.”

— Microsoft’s Lync 2013 app is now available in the Windows Phone Store as well as for iPhone and iPad. Lync is Microsoft’s unified communications software. Users need a Lync account in order to use the app. New features for the app include the ability to make and receive VoIP and video calls.
