Gartner: Android will likely surpass 1 billion users this year

Research firm Gartner has come out with a forecast of how many PCs, tablets, smartphones and other devices it thinks will be shipped over the next few years.

Among its findings: Android is on pace to reach 1.1 billion users worldwide across all devices in 2014, a 26 percent increase from 2013, according to the Gartner press release.

Gartner is also forecasting that worldwide shipments of all devices will go up 7.6 percent from 2013, for a total of 2.5 billion units.

But, predictably, the upward trends are in tablets and smartphones while PCs continue their downward trajectory.
