Microsoft to buy Revolution Analytics

Microsoft says it has reached an agreement to buy Revolution Analytics.

Revolution sells businesses software and services for “R,” the open-source programming language used by statisticians and other data crunchers. Revolution’s customers, Microsoft machine learning vice president Joseph Sirosh says in a blog post about the deal, include large banks and financial services firms, pharmaceutical companies, as well as manufacturing and technology companies.

A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to detail the terms of the purchase or when the company expects the deal to be completed.

Sirosh said Microsoft would plug Revolution’s technologies into Microsoft data products offered to its server customers and users of its cloud-computing framework.

“We are making this acquisition to help more companies use the power of R and data science to unlock big data insights with advanced analytics,” Sirosh said.

Revolution’s chief community officer, David Smith, spends much of his blog post about the deal outlining how Microsoft — historically not a fan of to open-source software development — isn’t actually that far-fetched a partner for Revolution and its own open-source efforts.
