Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson spent the weekend in Houston lobbying NBA owners on behalf of the city’s effort to keep the Kings.
And according to the CBS affiliate in Sacramento, Johnson said he has returned home more confident than ever that the team will stay put, saying “everyone is rooting for Sacramento.” Here’s that story.
Johnson is attempting to put together an ownership group and arena deal that would rival that of the Seattle group led by Chris Hansen, which has reached an agreement to buy the Kings from the current owners, the Maloof family.
That sale still has to be approved by the NBA, which is expected to address it at its annual Board of Governors meeting on April 18-19 in New York.
Johnson’s hope is to put together a viable alternative which would cause the NBA to not approve the sale to the Hansen group and keep the team in Sacramento.
