A corporate chill has come between Alaska Airlines and Icelandair, with Alaska ending its mileage partnership with the Icelandic carrier on June 1. For travelers with Alaska frequent-flier miles, it means they won’t be able to use those miles on Icelandair’s routes to more than two dozen European cities.
Starting June 1, Alaska mileage holders won’t be able to book, or change, an award flight on Icelandair.
For ticket purchases (with money, not miles) passengers on Icelandair flights on or after June 1 won’t earn Alaska miles. Before then, there’s a phaseout on earning mileage: Icelandair tickets purchased through May 31 will earn Alaska miles that can be used for flights through Feb. 28, 2014.
See the Alaska Airlines website for details. And if you’re planning a trip to Europe in the future using Alaska miles, book as far ahead as possible as the pool of available flights will shrink with Icelandair out of the picture.
