Grab and go: Alaska puts some California flights on sale

Get a cheap flight to Southern California and watch the surfers, like this guy wiping out by the Huntingdon Beach Pier. (Associated Press photo.)
If you’re planning a spring getaway to the Bay Area or Los Angeles, Alaska Airlines has launched a fare sale. Fares start at $79 from Seattle to San Francisco or Oakland, and $89 to L.A. and Long Beach.
As with all these short-term airfare sales, the early-birds get the best selection of flights. For this one tickets (which went on sale Thursday) have to be purchased by March 11 at 11.59 p.m. Sale fares, although not as low, are also available for Burbank, San Diego and other California destinations.
Here’s the fine print, aka restrictions. The sale fares are for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from March 19 through April 30. Tickets have to be bought at least 10 days in advance. But – and this is a big but – the sale fares don’t apply to flights from March 23 through April 13.
Before you put your money down always shop around since competing airlines may match fares. I like the Kayak travel site for its fast comparison of fares between various airlines and online travel agencies, plus a low-fare calendar.
