Some hiking trails are closed in the popular Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Leavenworth because of a lightning-caused wildfire.

The Granite Mountain Fire is burning 19 miles west of Leavenworth in the Klonaqua Lakes area. Hikers and climbers  in the surrounding Icicle drainage area, and even tourists in Leavenworth, may see and smell smoke (but tourist activities in Leavenworth are not expected to be affected).

According to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, the trail closures include Klonaqua Lakes Trail No. 1563 and French Creek Trail No. 1595 from its intersection with Snowall Creek Trail No. 1560 to its intersection with Paddy-Go-Easy Trail. In total, a seven-square-mile area was closed as of Tuesday morning because of the fire.

The wildfire began Aug. 4 when a lightning storm swept through north-central Washington.
