Get outta town: 3 last-minute ideas for your Labor Day weekend
Does your neighbor’s annual Labor Day barbecue create wildfire alerts? Is it a good weekend to hit the road? Here are some last-minute ideas if you need ‘em:
Just can’t wait for The Puyallup? Or, now that they’ve changed the name to Washington State Fair, you’re not sure where to find it? Then head north to Vancouver, B.C., for this final weekend of British Columbia’s big bash, the Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), which concludes its two-week run on Monday. They have thrill rides, they have concerts (REO Speedwagon!), they even have performing Mounties (gotta love those red uniforms). Gate admission: $8-$16 (free for 13 and younger).
You’ve got a three-day weekend, so there’s time for a road trip to beautiful Northern Idaho. Schweitzer Mountain Resort, near Sandpoint, is home to this weekend’s North Idaho Fall Fest, a celebration of mountain fun, all-day music and craft beer, with more than 60 beers on tap, from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and beyond. It’s the final weekend of summer operations at the ski resort, with scenic chairlift rides, hiking and mountain biking. Saturday through Monday; free admission to the village and concerts.
If you’re feeling more grapey than hoppy, you can still get that mountain-fresh feeling, at Sunriver Sunfest Wine Festival, Saturday and Sunday at Sunriver, Ore., just south of Bend. Expect more than 15 participating wineries, with medals going to best wines of the festival. A few distilleries and breweries will be there, too, along with food and other vendors.
