If you read here recently about Kelly Jackson’s fundraising zeal after his rescue from an ill-fated climb of Mount Rainier, and were thinking of attending his West Seattle fundraiser Wednesday, here’s maybe another reason to go: Meet every Northwest climber’s idol, Jim Whittaker.

Whittaker will be there selling and signing books and posters, with proceeds to go to Jackson’s effort to raise money for improved communications equipment for Mount Rainier National Park’s climbing rangers.

Whittaker, a West Seattle High School grad who now lives in Port Townsend, in 1963 was the first American to scale Mount Everest. Read more about him here.

Wednesday’s fundraiser is 6-9 p.m. at West Seattle’s West 5 Restaurant and Lounge, 4539 California Ave. S.W. Outdoors equipment will be raffled off, and sales of beer and food will also help raise money.
