Fly direct from Everett to Hawaii? Alaska Air files for FAA’s OK

Honolulu, Maui, Portland and Las Vegas would be the first destinations for Alaska jets if service commences from Paine Field, the airline proposed Thursday.

A list of up to 35 round-trip flights for the first year of operations was part of the airline’s next step in seeking Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for it to fly out of Paine Field, which is not currently used for commercial flights.

But it’s still all on the basis of “if and when.” Since Paine Field doesn’t currently have a passenger terminal, the timeline is likely years — or at least many months — out. In addition, the cities of Edmonds and Mukilteo and other opponents of commercial service at Paine Field recently filed a notice to challenge the idea in federal court.
