Few flights canceled at Sea-Tac Tuesday, but don’t forget to check

While cold weather continues to grip much of the nation, flight cancellations were few for travelers in and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Tuesday.

A check of the airport’s website showed a half-dozen cancellations to or from Midwest and East Coast airports Tuesday. Southwest Airlines cancelled three flights, to and from Chicago. Jet Blue canceled a flight from Boston to Seattle, American canceled a flight from Chicago, and a United/Air Canada codeshare flight to Toronto was also grounded.

Brrrr! Share your stopped-by-the-deep-freeze travel tale

The good news for Seattle travelers: So far, local carrier Alaska Airlines has no flight cancellations Monday or Tuesday because of the deep freeze in other parts of the nation. Alaska even expects to make it in and out of Minneapolis, despite a forecast Monday high of 14 below, with a wind chill of -50 degrees F.

But just as college students have been trying to get back to school from winter break, harsh winter weather in the Midwest — on the heels of last week’s East Coast snowstorm — has crippled air travel across the country. More than 9,000 flights have been canceled over the last four days

Midwest storms may mire flights

Some 500 flights were canceled in Denver Tuesday morning as a snow-lashing storm moved across the nation’s midland, so expect ripple effects at Sea-Tac and airports across the nation.
