Winter festivals in Chelan and Leavenworth are short of snow

Washington’s light-snow winter is taking its toll on snow-dependent recreation across the state, and now it’s starting to infringe on some popular winter festivals as well.

Community festivals in Chelan, this weekend and next, and Leavenworth, Jan. 18-19, have been forced to cancel some ski and snowshoe events because of insufficient snow, though other entertainment is going ahead as planned.

Leavenworth is considering trucking in snow from Stevens Pass, or borrowing a large snow-making gun from Mission Ridge Ski Area, to provide some snow for its Bavarian Icefest.

Wildfires bring some smoke to popular Lake Chelan

If you’re heading to Lake Chelan soon, be prepared for smoky haze because of a wildfire burning along the upper end of the Central Washington lake, plus other fires in the area. But tourism businesses and boating are operating as usual.

A  webcam at Stehekin, a remote boat-in community at the northwest end of the lake, showed smoky conditions Tuesday evening; it was less hazy at the  resort community of Chelan, about 50 miles away at the other end of the lake.
