The Bush legacy

He united us

in tragedy’s wake

On the eve of this historic election I find myself thinking of President George W. Bush in a way I haven’t before.

Amid plummeting approval ratings and relentless bashing by both Republicans and Democrats, he too waits on change.

What must it be like to be hated by so many? Surely, there is regret.

Regardless, every president deserves respect, not contempt. Once the political dust of the campaign settles, we will remember.

On Sept. 11, 2001, and the weeks that followed, President Bush gave us clear direction. He exuded strength during a time of absolute powerlessness.

When we looked for leadership, we found a leader. He gathered us together, and America became one nation overnight.

That should not be denied him.

If there is ever to be a positive image a historian might capture of Bush, this is it.

Although countless blunders have occurred since that time, this one endeavor, this one effort — this one moment — should be his.

His answer to the call was swift and unwavering and has proved his presidency.
