Veteran’s Day

Seattle Times file photo

Veteran’s Day is a time to honor all who have served in this nation’s armed forces.

They also have a place in history

Editor, The Times:

I attended our Veteran’s Day parade downtown today and watched all of the participants as they paraded by: color guards, old military vehicles, veterans from current and past conflicts and high-school marching bands. I applauded them all.

The very last group of participants was from the Iraq Veterans Against The War. Not expecting such a group to be represented, I was taken aback at first and hesitated, not being exactly sure what to do. In an instant, I said to myself, “Why not?” These men and women were veterans too, just like all of those who had paraded before them. All had made personal sacrifices for the things this nation holds dear, which include the freedoms of conscience and speech.

After all, that is what military service is all about: protecting freedoms.

I began to applaud them as proudly as I had done all of the others.

— Stephen Baker, Houston, Texas

Don’t bother

As a combat veteran wounded in Vietnam, I take no comfort in seeing Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush publicly honoring my fellow veterans.

The real story is told by Cheney’s five military deferments and Bush’s shameful Air National Guard tenure.

I would prefer they just stay home on Veterans day.
