The Catholic Church

Just words

Well, now that the Catholic Church has officially weighed in on President-elect Barack Obama, I guess I can weigh in on the Catholic Church [“SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters,” Politics, Nov. 13].

It’s not so much that they have made abortion and gay marriage the key issues of these times. It’s the fact that they are using their Bible as the authority by which to do so.

That said, shall we prohibit the eating of shellfish? The Bible calls it an abomination.

Shall we bring back slavery? According to the Bible, it’s OK.

I won’t even go into the acts that warrant stoning and worse, as they are beyond ridiculous and an insult to humanity.

Put simply, just because it’s in the Bible doesn’t mean it’s right. One of “civilized” man’s biggest problems is picking and choosing what parts of the Bible he’s going to accept — and at face value.

Go ahead and argue morality if you must; just stop claiming that a higher power is on your side. Your words are only that — your words.

— David McKenzie, Federal Way
