The shoe heard ’round the world

The Associated Press

President Bush ducks from a shoe thrown during Sunday’s news conference with Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad.

Sole on ice

Editor, The Times:

President George W. Bush has finally discovered the weapons of mass destruction [“Official: Shoe-thrower in Iraqi judicial custody,” Times, Nation & World, Dec. 16].

— Marcie Neuman, Buckley

Wear it

Eight years ago, President George W. Bush, was a shoe-in for president. Since then, he wore his loafers to loaf through the presidency.

To enforce his monarchy, he may have banged his shoe on the table. He did not tread softly, except to listen to our conversations illegally. He spent many hours on his bike dressed for the occasion; pedaling off his aspirations and dodging shoes — the ones thrown by someone who had a message to deliver — a message endorsed by many Arab states.

If the shoe fits, wear it.

— Leo Shillong, Bellingham
