Obama’s Rick Warren invitation

Let’s hope

I voted for President-elect Barack Obama for many reasons, one of which was his position on gay rights [“Barack Obama reaches out with Rick Warren invitation,” editorial, Dec. 23].

As a gay man, I’m not thrilled about Rick Warren speaking at the inauguration, but that doesn’t make it a bad decision.

Obama’s choice highlights a second, much more important reason that I voted for him. Obama promised to work with his opponents and build consensus whenever possible. Hopefully, this portends an administration that works across party lines and pushes a moderate bipartisan agenda.

Democrats will sometimes need their majorities to force through controversial legislation but that should be the exception rather than the rule. We will be a stronger country if compromise is the order of the day.

That said, I’m still counting on Democrats to deliver on gay rights. I and many others will be sorely disappointed if we are the first victims of bipartisan compromise.
