Obama’s Cabinet

Time to get their affairs in order

After reading the article about more tax problems faced by Obama’s nominees [“Another nominee with tax troubles,” News, Jan. 31] and the large amount of back taxes paid by Tom Daschle, nominated for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and new Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, I came up with a great idea: Obama should casually drop hints to just about every senator, governor and other influential politician in our country that they are being considered for a position in his administration and they should get their affairs in order “just in case.”

The amount of income tax, Social Security tax and other unpaid fees we would receive should easily cover any spending deficits from the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), health-care reform or increased education funding.

— Alaine Davis, Kenmore

Following their lead

I didn’t realize you didn’t have to pay taxes unless you were tapped for a Cabinet position.

Since it doesn’t look like I will be called on this time around, I won’t be sending in my taxes either.

— Carol Freedman, Kirkland
