Guantanamo Bay

The Associated Press

In this image reviewed by the U.S. Military, detainees are seen from a tower overlooking a common area where Guantanamo detainees gather, at camp 4 detention facility at the U.S. Naval Base, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in November.

Same despicable tactics

Editor, The Times:

Haven’t we had enough of the fear-mongering and outright lies that have supported the policies of the Bush administration?

The unlawful, un-American detention and treatment of detainees at Guantanamo have done more harm than good. Yet, President Obama’s first moves toward closing Guantanamo have been met with those same, despicable tactics.

Terrorists have been successfully convicted in our courts and safely incarcerated in our prisons. Our justice system is fully capable of handling sensitive, national-security issues — without compromising the rights provided by our system of justice.

— Chas Dreyfus, Sammamish

Disappearing remnants

The United States can handle trying the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. We can’t allow anyone to stop President Obama from closing this prison.

Remnants of the Bush administration need to disappear. We must allow our country to be restored to its original condition, so we can all be proud of it.

The U.S. does not torture or hold anyone indefinitely without due process. We can’t allow anyone to undermine the president’s efforts.

— Marcia Suzanne Richardson, Bothell
