Pit-bull attack

Time to pay up

To the Metropolitan King County Council and anyone resisting a ban on dangerous dogs, let pit bull owners keep their dogs, but have them pay their way [“Guilty plea in pit-bull attack,”Local News, Feb. 11].

Here is the math for King County in 2008: at least seven pit bull versus human attacks. In 2006, out of 83,358 dogs licensed, approximately 3 percent were pit bulls.

Total medical bills? You guess. $500,000? That would be $500,000 spread across 2,500 pit bulls.

Dog owner’s share for the year? $200. Add this to the current $20 license fee and you have a $220 annual license fee for a pit bull.

Fine, let owners keep their pit bulls. But, this freedom should cost $220 a year. The extra funds can go to our emergency responders; they will need it. Hey, you’re lucky; Shoreview, Minn., did this and they want $250.
