Life sentence for yogurt “bomb”

Unfair punishment for mentally ill man

I cannot believe we are sending a 66-year-old mentally ill man to prison for life because he claimed a bag of yogurt was a bomb when robbing a store of $2,000 [“Yogurt ‘bomb’ leads to life term,” NW Thursday, April 9].

Convicted murderers and rapists might get 20-year sentences. People who steal billions of dollars might get even less. One former Enron executive is in the process of getting his 24-year sentence reduced to 15 years.

Are we really protecting society and sending a message to criminals through the three-strikes law? This is not justice; it’s lunacy.
