Girl, 14, smothers baby

Jail isn’t the solution

Tuesday’s description of a young girl suffocating a newborn was heartbreaking [“Police say baby silenced with fatal pressure by mother, 14,” NW Tuesday, April 14].

The pain of labor is all-consuming, and to experience it unaided would be terrifying. What even greater terror makes a young girl suffer through pregnancy, labor alone in silence and then kill a newborn? I can’t help but think of the utter panic of a cornered animal.

There may be a solution to this problem, but jailing 14-year-olds for infanticide isn’t it.
