Mariners as the M’s

Nickname is just right

I’ve been giving some thought to how the Mariners are referred to as the M’s in newspaper headlines.

The M’s has a great sound to it, reminding me of those small chocolate candies that melt in the mouth, not in the hand.

Calling the University of Washington Huskies the H’s would not work as well. Imagine the crowd crying out, “Go H’s!” as the team takes the field. A hush would fall over Husky Stadium.

And what about the Seahawks, Sounders and (now historical) Sonics? Calling any of those teams the S’s would sound like the hissing of a snake.

The M’s is just right. Come to think of it, the team so far this season has been doing mmm-mmm good.
