U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter speaks during a news conference welcoming him to the Democratic Party on Wednesday. President Obama expressed his support for Specter.

Big-government backers should leave GOP

Editor, The Times:

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter has been a Republican in name only for years [“Specter says he’s switching from GOP to Democrats,” seattletimes.com, Politics & Government, April 28].

If the two-party system is to mean anything in the future, then people who love, trust and embrace big government should leave the Republican Party. A lot of conservatives stayed home or cast protest votes in the presidential election because there was little perceived difference between the parties.
