Boating season

Need to mitigate toll on the environment

This year’s “opening day” of the boating season [“Spring sails in on westerly wind,” page one, May 2] should introduce the need for stewardship among our boating culture to its Puget Sound playground.

The Times’ front-page acknowledgment of the beginning of the boating season is missing our newfound awareness that many of our old traditions are in need of modernizing.

As a lifetime boater, recreational and commercial, I’m willing to admit that the fees collected and regulatory actions funded by boating interests do not begin to mitigate the toll taken on the environment.

For all the lip service paid to repairing Puget Sound, little has been mentioned about the substantial category of pollution. Collectively, boats with engines are major sources of water and air pollution and contribute a substantial burden to our regulatory infrastructure.

We can continue to celebrate spring and Puget Sound, and even boats. But something has got to change.

— Art James, Port Orchard
