Class discussing race to resume with alterations

Difficult discussions are important

I can see how a discussion of race in the classroom could be intimidating to a student [“Controversial class on race to resume — with changes,” NWSaturday, March 9]. Race is a difficult topic and it can be uncomfortable to hear about the experiences some people have endured because of their race. None of us should be made to feel personally responsible for the creation of a society in which people are treated unfairly because of their race or many other possible aspects of who they are.

But all of us bear the responsibility of working toward a society in which everyone is treated equally and respectfully. If The Center School and other Seattle schools can give students some experience with these difficult discussions and better equip them to take on this work in the world, more power to them.

–Sarah Pierce, Seattle
