Alcoholism is a disease

Mark Mullen’s alcoholism is no excuse

Regarding the story on the Opinion page from David Coffey about alcoholism, I totally understand alcoholism is a disease [“Victims of a deadly disease,” Opinion, April 3]. I don’t blame Mark Mullen because he’s an alcoholic, but I do blame him for being a callous drunken driver.

Yes, alcoholism is a sad and deadly disease, but to just turn your nose at the law for DUI is nothing short of murder. At his age, he has to be aware of the results of such actions. Being sick does not give him the right to kill or maim anyone.
