Seattle has worst gender-pay gap in U.S.

Child-care cuts also hurting women

A big thank you to Gene Balk for his local news piece [“Study: Seattle’s gender pay gap worst in the U.S., online, April 8]. Now we know that women here make less than men by the largest margin in 50 major metropolitan areas. What a blow to Seattle’s squeaky-clean, progressive image.

This fact also highlights just how terrible the plans of the governor and Legislature are to continue their cruel cuts to social services, which hurt women and children the most.

One of those services getting the least attention is slashed child-care funding. Another recent article noted that the price tag for child care has nearly doubled in less than 20 years [“As child-care costs go up, families look for options,” front page, April 4].

The triple whammy of lower pay, ever-increasing child-care costs and cuts in state child care aid to the low income will leave few options for many women and their kids.
