UW women’s basketball coach leaves for Ohio State

Hire a female coach

I felt this was a great opportunity for my alma mater to show its support for hiring qualified women to coach college women’s sports teams [“McGuff leaves UW for Ohio State,” Sports, April 17]. Though I know there will be qualified male candidates wanting to fill this position, there are also many qualified females who need to be given the chance to prove their abilities, not only for themselves, but for the young girls who would aspire to such a career.

As I think we all know, in men’s college basketball, the coaching avenue is not open to women, even if they are the most qualified candidates. If Scott Woodward, Washington’s director of athletics, is as committed to women’s basketball at the UW as he states, I hope he will make the right decision to recruit and hire a qualified female. It would also help if she were a Husky, too!
