Gun-control bill rejected by U.S. Senate

Courage is too expensive

Americans now see how deep the cowardice of elected officials runs. Is “elected” even applicable today? Perhaps “purchased” is more accurate [“Culture, mistrust killed gun control effort,” page one, April 21].

Polls show deep desire for sensible gun-control. “Sensible” is open for debate, but the desire for changes isn’t. Congress aborted changes to the most accepted idea in the gun-control debate: background checks.

Even acceding to the National Rifle Association’s demands wasn’t enough for the gun manufacturers to stop elected officials from threatening to de-fund elected officials’ payrolls.

Our laws allow the slaughter of citizens, yet the electorate isn’t allowed to change them. We can’t change laws that threaten entrenched ideas backed with massive capital.

I love this country. I’m not blind to our failures. Politicians’ failures are counted in lives obliterated. My failure was to elect smart, courageous politicians.

I love this country, but I feel that love being drowned by the tears of those it is failing. This will continue until those elected become more afraid of their electors than their buyers. Candidates come cheap. Courage is what’s expensive.
